Pattern Coins

Pattern coins are experimental or trial pieces produced to showcase proposed concepts for coins or to test potential changes to designs. Many of these patterns showcase lesser-known designs from some of the foremost coin artists in history, including Gobrecht, Barber and Morgan. In some cases, patterns are produced using exotic materials to assess the viability of using those materials in minting. U.S. patterns include coins produced from aluminum, plastics, and even glass.

Coin Collectibility

Because of their role as prototypes, patterns are typically minted in extremely low quantities. Not only does this rarity add to their collectibility, but most are produced from fresh dies, often in proof finish, as the dies were rarely used long enough for them to show any signs of wear. Due to their scarcity and visual appeal, pattern coins are an increasingly popular segment of the numismatic market.
