The Queen's Beasts 1 oz Gold bullion coin series by The Royal Mint celebrates the British Monarchy and the centuries of fascinating heraldry that has been a part of their story. Each animal of The Queen's Beasts is fashioned into 1 oz .9999 fine Gold coins beginning in 2016. These beautiful Gold coins come in a range of sizes from 1/4 oz to 5 oz. At the coronation of Her Majesty The Queen, ten heraldic beasts stood guard. Each beast sits erect, supporting a shield upon which there is a coat of arms or a heraldic badge. Plaster models were created for the occasion, symbolizing the various strands of royal ancestry brought together in a young woman about to be crowned queen. The Design of the Queen’s Beasts
In the autumn of 1952, the Minister of Works, in preparation for the great event some months ahead, called upon the Royal Academician and sculptor Sir, James Woodford, OBE, to create ten new beasts similar in form to King Henry VIII's beasts and character to the ten at Hampton Court but more particularly, appropriate to the Queen. Today, The Queen's Beasts plaster models can be found at the Canadian Museum of History in Quebec, while Portland stone replicas watch over Kew Gardens in the United Kingdom. The Beasts
